Beyond Light Campaign

Travel to Europa, master Stasis, and stop Eramis from using the Darkness to save her people.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light arrived on November 10, 2020, marking the fifth expansion and fourth year of content for Bungie's first-person shooter. This major release transported players to Jupiter's icy moon Europa to confront Eramis, a Fallen Kell who wields the Darkness. Unlike previous conflicts focused solely on the Light, this campaign introduces Stasis, a new subclass rooted in the power of Darkness that allows Guardians to freeze enemies with ice-based abilities. The expansion also featured the return of familiar faces like the Exo Stranger and Variks from the original Destiny's House of Wolves. As the first major update released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it signaled a new era for the franchise while simultaneously cycling older destinations into the Destiny Content Vault to manage install sizes.

Lore & Background

The narrative centers on Eramis, a Fallen Kell who believes the Traveler abandoned her people before humanity's Golden Age. Seeking revenge against the Traveler while aiming to save her own kin, she harnesses the power of the Darkness found on Europa. This new force manifests as Stasis, an ice-based elemental damage type that contrasts with the traditional Light powers of Arc, Solar, and Void. The story guides the Guardian through a conflict where they must obtain this forbidden power themselves, learning to freeze enemies and shatter their defenses. Eramis is not merely a villain but a complex figure driven by survival and vengeance, challenging the Guardians' understanding of the Light versus Darkness dichotomy. The expansion also reintroduced Earth's Cosmodrome from the original game as an introductory destination for new players, alongside the return of the Vault of Glass raid, updated with Destiny 2 mechanics during Season 14.

In Their Own Story

Upon arriving on Europa, Guardians are guided by the Exo Stranger and Variks to confront Eramis and her forces. The campaign unfolds through a series of missions where players utilize their new Stasis subclass abilities: the Warlock's Shadebinder uses an icy staff for the "Winter's Wrath" super; the Hunter's Revenant wields dual ice kamas in "Silence and Squall"; and the Titan's Behemoth employs frozen gauntlets for "Glacial Quake." These abilities are further customized through Aspects and Fragments, allowing players to create crystal walls or freezing fields. The storyline bridges into Year 4's seasonal content, starting with Season of the Hunt, which focused on Xivu Arath raising an army of Wrathborn. Subsequent seasons included Season of the Chosen, featuring a shadow war against Empress Caiatl; Season of the Splicer, where Mithrax helped stop an "Endless Night" by the Vex; and Season of the Lost, where Mara Sov sought to exorcise Savathûn. The campaign concluded with the release of the Deep Stone Crypt raid on November 21, 2020, set in the Clovis Bray facility.

Reader's Guide

To succeed in Beyond Light, players must first acquire the Stasis subclass by completing the campaign on Europa. Once unlocked, Guardians can customize their abilities by earning Aspects and Fragments through quests, tailoring their playstyle to freeze, slow, or shatter enemies. The expansion requires navigating Europa's icy terrain and engaging in new player-versus-environment locations. Key activities include the Deep Stone Crypt raid, released on November 21, 2020, which takes place in the Clovis Bray facility and unlocks additional activities upon completion. Players should also prepare for four seasonal offerings: Season of the Hunt, Chosen, Splicer, and Lost. The campaign was made free-to-play on June 4, 2024, though remaining content is now part of the Beyond Light Pack. For legacy content, players can access the Vault of Glass raid via the new "Legends" node in the Director, which serves as a hub for unvaulted activities.
