The Awakening is deeply tied to the cosmic struggle between the Traveler and the Darkness. While the Hive worship the Darkness and seek to consume souls through their rituals of sacrifice, Guardians are not inherently immune to such predation; Hive can drain Light and consume Guardian souls in specific rituals. However, this gift comes with a burden; Guardians typically have no memories of their past lives, as resurrection by the Traveler's Light usually erases such recollections. Only in rare, exceptional cases do fragments of a former life surface, but these are not common experiences.

In Their Own Story

The cold air bit at his cheeks as he gasped for breath, the first inhale of a life that should have ended hours ago. He remembered the impact of the fall, the shattering of bone, the sudden silence. Now, there was only a hum in his veins, a golden warmth spreading from his chest outward. He looked down at his hands; they were no longer trembling with fear but radiating a soft, ethereal glow. The Traveler hovered above, a silent sentinel watching its new child rise from the dust of the dead.

Reader's Guide

The narrative arc begins when an individual dies in the line of duty or by misfortune during the Golden Age or the early years of the Collapse. Upon death, their soul is intercepted by the Traveler's power rather than passing into whatever lies beyond. The Traveler then reconstructs the body and awakens the spirit within a new vessel, often near the Last City or in a strategic location where protection is needed. This process is instantaneous for the Guardian but marks a permanent shift in their nature. Once awake, the newly minted Guardian must navigate a world that has forgotten them or views them with suspicion. They are immediately drawn to the Tower, where they meet the Vanguard and learn to wield their new elemental abilities against the Fallen, Hive, and other threats. This event sets the stage for all major conflicts in Destiny's history, as these resurrected champions become the primary defense against the Darkness, eventually leading to the formation of clans, the discovery of ancient secrets, and the ultimate confrontation with Oryx and his successors.

• Not everyone who dies is chosen; the Traveler selects specific individuals whose souls resonate with its power.
• Exo Guardians are unique because they are robotic bodies reanimated by the Light after their original human consciousnesses were transferred into Exo frames; Exos are not piloted by separate humans.
• The Light does not grant blanket immunity to the Hive's soul-eating rituals; Hive can drain Light and consume Guardian souls in specific rituals, making such encounters perilous.
