Fallen
Refugees who forged a new empire from the scraps of dying worlds.
The Fallen are a resilient alien species known throughout the solar system as masters of scavenging and survival. Originally refugees who fled their home systems during the rise of the Hive, they established themselves in the outer reaches of human space, particularly within The Reef. They are characterized by their distinct armor, advanced technology derived from reverse-engineering other races, and a society organized into competing factions known as Houses. Unlike many hostile alien species that seek conquest for glory or religious fervor, the Fallen prioritize endurance above all else. Their history is defined by adaptation; they have survived wars against the Cabal, the Hive, and humanity itself by utilizing whatever resources are available to them. While often viewed as antagonists or opportunistic traders, their presence in the solar system serves as a testament to their ability to thrive amidst chaos.

Lore & Background
Before settling in the solar system, the Fallen were victims of the Hive's expansion. Their homeworlds were consumed by the darkness that Oryx and his kin spread across the galaxy. Forced to flee, they became drifters, scavenging technology from fallen civilizations to keep their own fleets running. This history instilled a deep distrust of tradition and a fierce pragmatism in their culture. They do not worship gods or seek eternal glory; they simply wish to continue existing. Upon arriving near Earth, they established The Reef as a central hub for trade and diplomacy. Here, the King Calus rose to power, uniting many of the warring Houses under his rule aboard his massive dreadnaught station. However, internal strife remained constant, with ambitious leaders constantly plotting against one another. Their technology is a patchwork quilt of Vex circuitry, Cabal engineering, and human design, all modified to suit their unique physiology and needs. The relationship between the Fallen and humanity has fluctuated over time. At times they are enemies, raiding ships and attacking colonies for resources. In other moments, they become uneasy allies when a greater threat, such as the Taken or the Darkness itself, emerges. Their understanding of the Light is limited compared to Guardians, yet they study it with intense curiosity, often attempting to replicate its effects through technology rather than spiritual bond.
In Their Own Story
The air inside the Dreadnaught hummed with recycled oxygen and static electricity. Kael adjusted his respirator, watching the neon lights flicker against the curved metal walls of the corridor. Outside the viewport, the stars were distant pinpricks behind a veil of debris. He checked his weapon, a scavenged rifle modified with Vex optics. It was heavy, but reliable. In the Fallen way, reliability meant life. A message chimed on his wrist display. The Queen wanted him in the throne room. Eramis did not tolerate delays. Kael stepped over a discarded circuit board, his boots clanking softly. He knew what awaited him—more orders to strip another ship bare for parts, more risks taken for survival. But as he looked at the stars, he felt no regret. They were refugees who had become kings of the void.
Reader's Guide
The Fallen operate under a philosophy of extreme survivalism, believing that only the adaptable endure in a hostile universe. Their society is fractured into competing Houses, each vying for resources and dominance within their territory. Historically, these factions warred constantly until Calus united many under his rule on the Dreadnaught station known as The Reef. Leadership is often determined by strength or cunning rather than lineage, allowing ambitious figures like Eramis to seize power through betrayal. They view technology as the ultimate lifeline, scavenging and reverse-engineering artifacts from the Vex, Cabal, and even humanity. While they do not naturally wield the Light of the Traveler, they study it with intense curiosity, often treating Ghosts as tools or curiosities rather than sacred bonds. Their relationship with Guardians is complex; some Fallen serve as uneasy allies against greater threats like the Hive, while others remain hostile scavengers seeking to strip worlds bare for profit. Ultimately, their existence proves that even refugees can become a formidable power in the solar system through sheer ingenuity and resilience.
