Zavala first appeared as the Titan representative alongside Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 and Warlock Vanguard Ikora Rey. From the Tower overlooking the Last City, he coordinated strikes against humanity's enemies until the Cabal Red Legion attacked during Destiny 2, severing the Guardians' connection to the Traveler. Zavala retreated to Titan to regroup survivors before joining the campaign to reclaim the City. After Cayde-6 was murdered, Zavala rejected Ikora Rey's proposal to mobilize a campaign of revenge against Uldren Sov, insisting on protecting the City instead. His story deepened in The Witch Queen and Season of the Haunted, revealing he had married a mortal woman named Safiyah and adopted her son, Hakim. Their deaths left him with enduring guilt, exploited by a supernatural manifestation of Safiyah during Season of the Haunted.

In Their Own Story

In The Final Shape, Zavala entered the Traveler with the Vanguard to confront the Witness. The entity offered to restore his dead family, exploiting his grief and crisis of faith. During this conflict, his Ghost, Targe, was destroyed while protecting him, leaving Zavala mortal and unable to use the Light. Despite losing his immortality and his Ghost, he continued the campaign and later acquired powers associated with Darkness. In the 2026 Monuments of Triumph update, following these losses, Zavala retired as commander, transferring leadership of the Vanguard to Ikora Rey. His narrative arc shifted from a rigid military coordinator to a figure grappling with suppressed grief, ultimately finding resolution not through punishment or denial, but by accepting that his loss could not be resolved by force.
