While they share a common origin, some are curious and playful, while others are stoic or deeply protective. Over time, their bond with Guardians has deepened into something resembling friendship or even family. They remember everything, serving as living archives of history for a species that has lost so much.

In Their Own Story

The dust settled slowly over the ruined plaza, the air thick with ash and silence. The Guardian lay still, armor cracked and life fading from their eyes. Suddenly, a soft hum cut through the quiet. A small sphere of blue light phased out of thin air, hovering anxiously above the fallen warrior. "Come on," it whispered, its voice trembling with urgency. "You can't leave me here." With a pulse of radiant energy, the broken form began to knit itself back together, bones reforming and scars sealing. The Guardian gasped, eyes snapping open to meet the glowing gaze of their savior.

Ghosts are the cornerstone of the Guardian's existence, serving as both resurrection engines and constant companions. Without them, a Guardian is just a human who can die permanently. They were created by Dr. Eric Allister using technology derived from the Traveler to ensure humanity could fight back against the Darkness. Each Ghost has a unique personality and appearance, often reflecting the nature of their bonded Guardian or their own internal spark. They are capable of independent thought, humor, and deep emotional connection, making them far more than mere tools. Some Ghosts have even been known to bond with multiple Guardians over time if one passes away permanently. However, this power comes with risks. The Traveler's energy is finite, and the process of resurrection places a strain on both the Guardian and the Ghost. In some cases, Ghosts can be damaged or destroyed, which would leave their Guardian vulnerable to true death. Protecting your Ghost is often just as important as protecting yourself in combat.
