Eris Morn

She walks in shadows so others may walk in light.

Eris Morn is a pivotal non-player character from Bungie's Destiny series, first introduced as an advisor and quest-giver in the 2014 downloadable content pack, The Dark Below. Voiced by Morla Gorrondona, who also provided the vocal effects for Hive enemies like Thralls and Wizards, Eris possesses expert knowledge of the alien Hive threat. While typically functioning as a vendor within the Tower, she has taken proactive roles to assist Guardians in protecting Earth's last safe city. Her character development was driven by Bungie's need to flesh out the Hive faction following criticism of the base game's lack of meaningful story content. Gorrondona secured the role alongside Hive leader Omnigul due to her aptitude for "vocal gymnastics" and creative use of diction, with studio staff noting it would be "poetic" for the same actor to voice both Eris and the Hive she once lived among.

Lore & Background

Eris Morn's history is defined by her time living among the Hive and her subsequent psychological struggle. Described as "slowly slipping into madness" after her ordeal, she harbors an "odd reverence" for her tormentors that exists alongside a burning desire to destroy them. In Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, this burden became physical when she was haunted by the ghosts of her former fireteam, manifested by a mysterious Pyramid structure on Earth's moon. By the events of Beyond Light, Eris had learned to wield the power of The Darkness through Stasis abilities, traveling to Europa with the Drifter and the Exo Stranger to combat the Fallen led by Eramis. A 2021 IGN report noted that her storylines, planned by male narrative leads, sometimes leaned on harmful stereotypes regarding women's mental health despite internal objections. Additionally, a lore book included in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen revealed that Mara Sov had contacted Eris between the events of Forsaken and Shadowkeep.

In Their Own Story

Eris first appeared in the Tower during The Dark Below expansion, directing Guardians to destroy Crota’s crystal and kill Omnigul. She subsequently guided players into the Hellmouth to permanently slay Crota inside his Throne World during the Crota's End raid. In The Taken King expansion, she warned Vanguard leadership about Oryx's Taken invasion and worked behind the scenes with Mara Sov and Osiris. Eris did not appear in Destiny 2's Red War campaign as she had left the Tower prior to the Cabal invasion; instead, a lore book titled Truth to Power revealed her life in St. Petersburg, Russia during the Golden Age. During Shadowkeep, after discovering the Pyramid ship, she helped Guardians craft armor to resist its corrupting influence and defeat Nightmares. By Season of the Haunted, she used her knowledge of Nightmares to guide Crow, Zavala, and Empress Caiatl through their manifested traumas.

Reader's Guide

Gorrondona prepared for Eris by drawing on professional theatre experience and improv techniques to make "decisive but not obvious choices within seconds," aiming to ground the character without reducing her to a spooky caricature. She emphasized that Eris possesses "strong, meaningful and comparable emotions" connected to reality. In 2019, Gorrondona noted in an interview with Fanbyte that she felt personally connected to Eris and viewed the role as indicative of a cultural shift toward portraying "powerful and substantial" female characters rather than shallow or hypersexualized ones. The voice actor also acknowledged that even insiders find the series' lore complicated, citing instances where she needed explanations repeated due to lack of context. For her performance in Shadowkeep, Gorrondona described Eris as emotionally burdened in a way that became physical, reflecting the ghosts haunting her.
