Europa, however, was not a civilian colony but a restricted research outpost operated by Clovis Bray, dedicated to secretive experiments and the development of advanced technology. This prosperity bred a certain complacency. Humanity believed they were safe under the Traveler's watch, but the culture of the time focused heavily on expansion and aesthetic perfection, with Earth becoming a jewel of neon spires and floating architecture. This hubris left civilization vulnerable when the true nature of the Darkness revealed itself. The end came swiftly, shattering the peace in moments known as the Collapse. The infrastructure that defined the era was destroyed, forcing survivors to retreat into bunkers. From these shelters, they emerged to build the Last City around the Traveler. It was only after this devastation that the Traveler created the Ghosts specifically to raise Guardians and protect what remained from the enemies who had ended the Golden Age.
