Oryx

The God-King who conquered death to rule the galaxy until Guardians ended his reign.

Oryx, known universally as the Taken King, stands as one of the most formidable adversaries ever faced by humanity in the solar system. Originally a Hive God-King named Aurash, he ascended to power through ritual and conquest before embracing the Taking, a dark magic that twists souls into eternal servitude. His invasion brought his massive fleet to Earth's doorstep, threatening to consume the Traveler itself. For years, his shadow loomed over the Last City until Guardians finally ventured into his pocket dimension to end his reign.

Lore & Background

Born as Aurash, he was one of three siblings born from a Hive queen. Through the Sword-Logic, a philosophy stating that power justifies claims, he murdered his mother and claimed her soulfire to become Oryx. He subsequently conquered vast swathes of the galaxy, forcing entire civilizations into servitude or death. His greatest achievement was mastering the Taking, allowing him to corrupt the souls of enemies even after their physical destruction. This power allowed him to build an army that could not die, stretching his influence across the Ascendant Plane. His ultimate goal was to claim the Traveler and rewrite reality itself according to Hive law.

In Their Own Story

The silence inside the Throne World was heavy, broken only by the hum of dead stars. Oryx sat upon his throne, carved from the bones of a defeated god. Below him, legions of Taken warriors waited in perfect stillness, their eyes burning with stolen light. He felt the intrusion before it happened—a spark of Light where there should be none. A Guardian stood at the edge of the arena, weapon raised. Oryx did not rise; he simply smiled, knowing that every claim made must be backed by blood.

Reader's Guide

The Hive operate on metaphysical laws distinct from human understanding, centering on the consumption of souls as fuel for their magic. Their power is drawn from the Darkness, specifically through the Ascendant Plane where the dead reside and await judgment. To rule this plane requires absolute dominance, a principle known as the Sword-Logic. This philosophy dictates that any claim made by a Hive god must be backed by the ability to enforce it violently against rivals. Guardians wield the Light, a cosmic force capable of resisting this corruption and healing wounds inflicted by dark magic. When Oryx utilized the Taking, he twisted souls into his own image, bypassing natural death to create an eternal army. However, the Light remains immune to most forms of Taken corruption unless willingly surrendered through betrayal or weakness. Understanding these rules is vital for surviving encounters with Hive sorcery in the field. The balance between Light and Darkness defines the struggle across the galaxy, where victory often requires sacrificing one's own humanity to claim power over the void.
