Throughout the history of the Solar System, the Witness has operated in the shadows, manipulating events from behind the scenes. Direct Hive allegiance to the Witness began with Rhulk and the Krill; Oryx was never formally a Disciple—he was a Hive god who served the Deep/Witness indirectly, not as a formal Disciple. Savathûn only feigned alignment later. The Witness is a being that transcends time and space, first appearing as a floating golden shape or eye in Season of Arrivals, then as a paracausal projection during the Lightfall campaign, before revealing its true humanoid form in the final cutscene of Lightfall. Its philosophy is specifically the 'Final Shape'—a static stasis ending change and suffering—contrasting sharply with the Guardians' struggle for freedom and growth. The Witness does not hate life; it simply sees it as something that must be ended to achieve a state of perfect, eternal silence.

The Witness is not a traditional faction with ranks or hierarchies but rather a singular consciousness commanding the Taken and other hostile forces across the galaxy. Its primary goal is the 'Final Shape,' a state of absolute stillness where all life ceases to exist as we know it, effectively ending the cycle of birth, death, and suffering. Members of its influence include the Taken, who are former beings twisted by the Witness's power, as well as various Hive and Fallen forces that have been corrupted or coerced into serving its will. In the conflict against humanity, the Witness acts as the ultimate adversary, challenging Guardians not just with physical threats but with a philosophical counter-argument to their existence. It seeks to prove that the Light is a mistake and that true peace can only be found in non-existence. The Witness's role is that of a cosmic judge, executing its sentence on civilizations it deems flawed. Guardians must confront not just an army but an ideology, as the Witness offers a tempting vision of peace at the cost of everything that makes life meaningful. Its influence spreads through subtle corruption and direct assault, making it one of the most dangerous entities in the Destiny universe.
